Current Issues

June 2024 – Extreme Heat

Unlike humans, dogs can only sweat through their footpads and cool themselves by panting. Soaring temperatures can cause heat stress and be physically damaging or fatal.

Provide water and shade –  even brief periods of direct exposure to the sun during a heatwave can have life-threatening consequences.

Exercise your pet early in the morning or in the evening – never exercise dogs by cycling while they try to keep up or by running them while you jog. Dogs will collapse before giving up, at which point it may be too late to save them.

Avoid hot pavement – Dogs’ footpads easily burn on heated roads, pavements and sand.

Never leave a dog in a parked car in warm weather, even for short periods with the windows slightly open. Dogs trapped inside parked cars can succumb to heatstroke within minutes – even if the car isn’t parked in direct sunlight.

June 2024 – Problems with Grass-seeds

We are currently seeing many pets having issues with grass-seeds.  If your pet is suddenly worrying their paws, shaking its head or looking uncomfortable, please call contact the clinic to book an appointment.

April 2024 – Flystrike

With the warmer months approaching, we all need to be extra vigilant and regularly check our small outdoor pets.  Soiling or injury can lead to flystrike – a serious, painful condition caused by flies laying their eggs on your pet.  Contact us immediately if you have cause for concern.
