Ferrets are obligate carnivores which maintain a hunting instinct. Commerciall available pellet foods are available which may also help to minimise the typical musky smell of ferrets. This type of food may result in boredom in such an inquisitive species, particularly if fed from a bowl. Accordingly, pelleted diets may be scattered or hidden, and there are some slow-release toys available that may help with this.
Occasional treats may be given, including raw eggs, dead chicks, etc, however obesity is common, and so quantity of treats should be carefully monitored, especially as ferrets are prone to ‘stashing’ feed.
